The Medal of Honor
Etin, the new girl, walked into the school and sat alone. A few minutes later, she heard about a genius in her class who always came first.
"I'll beat you this time, Barakat", she whispered, wearing a mischievous smile.
Etin started to take her studies seriously and started to read ahead of the class; in time, she was noticed by a teacher.
"Barakat, you have to fasten your belt, as there's someone here who is likely going to take your position,", Mr. James told Barakat during the Biology class.
"Beat me? Nobody can take my position from me," Barakat boasted in front of everybody in the class.
"Really? Let's see, then," Etin snapped back. "Haha, this is going to be the survival of the fittest", Mr. James concluded, and our fingers are crossed."
The day for the examination came, and everybody wrote and was waiting patiently for their dossier to be out and distributed on the prize-giving day.
On the 6th of December, the whole hall was decorated, and guests of honor were seated, including the parents and their wards.
Etin was holding her heart in her hands as she didn't know what to expect; however, Barakat was boasting all about it.
"This is the moment we have been waiting for..." Mr. Jude, the principal, started with an opening speech.
It's an honor to present this Medal to the best-graduating student for this term; it's no other person than... The whole air was filled with silence. "Etin Bambe," Mr. Jude broke the silence. Barakat, who had already stood up, was embarrassed as she quietly sat down, which made the kids behind her laugh. Etin was so excited that she could beat the so-called genius down.
She walked up in high esteem and walked straight to the podium to receive her medal of honor as the best student in biology, and then Barakat learned a life lesson: that pride comes before a fall.
