Learn. Unlearn & Relearn.

"Do you want to grow tall? Eat Beans!!" Hahaha, this was like an anthem in my home and even in schools as my teacher taught me that Beans can make a person very tall because it is rich in protein. This leads me to answer this week's prompt which says; Tell us about a time when you learned that something you’d always thought was true was incorrect. I grew up learning that Beans had a lot of protein until I stumbled on a popular doctor's post on X which explains that Beans have less protein but more carbohydrates and fibre. I was awestruck..like what??????? He further explained that food rich in protein such as fish, milk, yoghurt and beans was far from it. Haha, I had to start unlearning what I have always thought was correct after doing my research too. Moving on, I never knew I had been using a drinking straw incorrectly until my little niece corrected me. That Saturday morning, after the house chores, being a good aunt I went out to buy Chivita Happy Hour for my nie...

Aquaphobia

Image
That morning, I wore my favourite T-shirt on a pair of trousers as I anticipated the much fun I planned to have at the Casino resort and bar. For a while, I have always admired swimmers so much that I wish I could. Deep down, there's so much passion and drive within me to learn how to swim, so I booked a session with Ucee, my coursemate who knows how to swim. The day arrived for me to cast my fears aside as I headed out with Ucee to live in the moment, have fun, and learn while at it. "Ucee, are you sure I can do this?" I asked in fear as soon as I set my eyes on the swimming pool; that was because I naturally had an aquaphobia. "Relax, baby girl, you'll enjoy it. Let's get a cold bath first," Ucee reassured me as we headed to the bathroom to have a cold shower. Subsequently, we headed to the changing room to wear our swimsuits. If there's anything I did more of, it was to take a lot of photos of the beautiful environment, myself, and Ucee. "Hol...

A Punctuality Wake-up Call.

Image
Growing up with my parents was a beautiful experience, as I never had to go to school late. My parents would ensure we were all up by 5:30 am as we said our morning devotion and began our daily routine of house chores as they were both civil servants who had the intent of beating morning traffic, and that became a lifestyle for us too. One day, they both had to travel for the funeral of my maternal grandmom and left us with our aunt around the hood. My aunt was a housewife who woke up very late and had to ensure the house was taken care of before leaving for school. "It's 5:30 a.m.; why are you up so early? Go back to sleep, please; we will be up by 6:30 am," she reprimanded me and my siblings when we tried to wake up as early as we did when we were at home. One Monday morning, I remember going to school very late, even after waking up so early to prepare for school. "Get down on your knees," the punctuality prefect commanded me, and being a junior student, I ha...

Room 101

"Who's there?" Tonia was startled as she began to notice the creak of footsteps behind her. "Becky? Is that you?" She called out to Becky, her twin, who dared to visit a particular haunted house about thirty minutes ago on a trip to the fair. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a soft, silver glow over everything in sight as Tonia, who seemed to be a very adorable lady with long blonde hair tied back in a ponytail in her mid-twenties, made her way to the old abandoned, dilapidated house a few meters away in search of Becky. As she got closer, the pace of the footsteps intensified, causing her to jerk for a minute. Determined to look for her twin, she slowly pulled open the unlocked door with a rusty door handle. "Becky," she called out in fear as she began to hear the echoes of her voice. She stood still to observe the house when she saw bloody handwriting on the glass window. "Welcome to my world. Nobody gets out of here alive." "What...

Elena.

I am Elena, and I met Greg during my National Youth Service Corps in Abuja. He was a dark-skinned dude who was adored by his dark and shiny beard and his teutonic-tinted gold hair. I had just ended my relationship with Marcus, the narcissistic monster who almost made me insane. Thank God I dared to leave after so much manipulation by him. I went to a nearby restaurant to have a meal that morning before heading to my place of primary assignment when I met this young, fine man. "Hello Miss, I am Greg; do you mind if I pay your bills?" The voice resounded from behind, and when I turned around, I almost fell on my face. "Woosh, what a fine-looking young man." I sheepishly smiled because I was ready to be open-minded again, irrespective of how my previous relationship ended. "Sure," I nodded in affirmative as I received my order from the waiter. Greg, on the other hand, brought in his order: "Do you mind if I sit here?" He asked politely. "I don...

The Surprise Bridal Shower.

I met Zee at my place of work three years ago, and somehow we connected like we'd known each other since the very first day we met, and the friendship continued to wax stronger. A year later, Zee introduced the love of her life to me, and a few months ago, he popped the big question. I was seated in my living room munching on my cookies while doing Netflix and chilling when a message popped in. "We have a wedding to plan." It was from Zee, and I only remember jumping from one couch to another to express my excitement as I reached for my phone to congratulate her on the happy news. "Yeah, I am so happy for you, Zee; don't worry, I ensure your wedding day goes almost flawlessly." We ended the call in a very exciting mode, and then I thought of doing something extra for Zee; "she deserves more than just a regular wedding, and she loves surprises too, so what shall I do?" I soliloquized. The next day at work, I stylishly copied some of her friend's...

Not Just A Coffee Bag..

Kingsley My cousin arrived earlier this year for the Yuletide holiday, and every time I see him, I remember exactly this time last year how he was still battling to break free from drug addiction. He is gradually becoming a better person, and what more can I ask for in a holiday order than spending it with my lovely cousin? That morning, Kingsley was watching his favourite TV station while I was busy unpacking the groceries I bought last night, as I was too tired to do that yesterday. I heard a beep on my phone: "When am I coming for the fittings of my outfit?" Shola, my client's message popped in as soon as I finished responding to her; my eyes caught the time, and it was exactly 8:55 am." Kaycee, it's almost time for my favourite show; you'll have to excuse me for the next 45 minutes as I will be taking over the television," I told Kingsley, as I knew he wasn't a lover of K-drama. "Oh, okay, I am no fan of K-drama anyway," he responded im...

How's the weather over there? It's been a very hot season here until the rain decided to fall today and I am loving the weather right now. Since it is raining here, I got inspired by the rain because I was outside without an umbrella when it started but was helped by a good jolly fellow who shared her umbrella with me and then I thought, we all need an umbrella during the rain. However, the umbrella can be also figurative, which means we need people to run to during the hard days or storms in our lives. Which is why I will be sharing this song today. Umbrella - Rihanna ft jayz The umbrella can represent protection and loyalty during tough days. Do you have a figurative umbrella in your life? When it gets tough right now whom will you turn to? Can you be an umbrella for someone too? Empathy and compassion can be the driving force to being available for someone who is in dire need in turbulent times. Remembering, that the table can turn too will help us to stay humble while shari...

There's No Place Like Home.

One Friday morning a few years ago, I visited one of my uncles, who was very affluent; it's been a while since I saw him, with the plan to go back home that same day; however, his wife wanted me to spend more days with them, maybe because she loved my aura and how I always lend a hand with house chores and other errands when I visited. "Do I call your mom to tell her you will be spending a few weeks more with us?" Aunty Tolani politely asked, and I felt that since they were affluent and had almost everything I needed to stay comfortable, it wouldn't be a bad idea. "Yes, ma'am, but I didn't carry enough clothes since I didn't plan on staying long initially," I added. "Oh, don't worry about that; I'll take you to the nearest shopping mall; you'll pick any outfit of your choice, shoes, and bags; you like that?" She smiled and patted my shoulder. In excitement, I ran off to hug her and say, "Yes, ma," I like that,...
